  • Notes
    • John (J145) is the father of children bapt 1692-1707 in Hungerford. The fact that he acted as bondsman for the marriage of Henry Hidden and Ann Stratton suggests that there is a relationship between him and Henry (H048), who is the son of Richard Hidden (R056). It is possible that he is the un-named son (x003) of Richard (r056) bapt in Inkpen in 1658. This would fit in with his age and would make him a brother of Henry(h048). It also fits with his trade as victualler, as this was also the trade of his father-in-law Henry Robinson als Hunt. When J145 died in 1710 his young children were left as orphans. The eldest son John (J147) and the second son Thomas (T058) have been seen as possible progenitors of the Corse (FG20) and Later Speen (FG16) branches of the Hidden family, whose previous history is not known with certainty. In view of the connection between the Corse branch and Henry (H048) it seems probable that John (J147) the eldest son of J145 can be identified as the progenitor of the Corse branch. If this is correct then it is less likely that Thomas Hidden who in 1741 claimed land in the manor of Hidden as his inheritance can be identified with T058 the second son of John (J145). We have therefore given Thomas the claimant the ID of T098 in order to distinguish him from T058 the son of J145. Much depends on how much reliance we may place on Thomas's (T098) story, as told in his claim. It seems clear that he is not in possession of all the facts in his great grandfather's time, but one would expect him to be accurate about his father and probably his grandfather also. If the assumption about the ancestry of J145 is correct then this does not correspond well with the assumption that T058 and T098 are the same. T098 says that his father John is in very low circumstances. however J145 was in fact a fairly prosperous and respected member of the Hungerford town community. He also says that he is the son & heir of his father whereas he is not the eldest son of J145. It is possible to make the further assumption that his elder brother died, but there is no evidence that he died in infancy. There is the possibility that his brother died before 1741 when he made his claim. It is theoretically possible for BOTH Thomas (T058) and John (J147) to be progenitors of the Later Speen and Corse branches respectively, since the last date we have for John of FG20 is 1740, after which he disappears and could have died before the date of the claim in 1741. However this scenario seems somewhat improbable. The most likely place where Thomas's father might be found is in the Shaw, Speen, Newbury area where Nicholas lived and where there are unfortunately significant gaps in the parish registers due to the disturbances of the Civil War.
John's wife died in 1707 at the time of the birth of their son Joseph. Both John and Joseph died at the same time in 1710. They are said to have drowned and this was likely to have been an accident on the river.
