FREDERICK CHARLES HIDDEN (F30) His birth is recorded in the RGI for the 4th quarter of 1875 in the District of Newbury (ref 2c 232). His Army records seem to indicate a slight discrepancy as to year of birth. They do provide us, however, with his place of birth as Speen and his home address at the time of enlistment as Donnington, both of which are within the Registration District of Newbury.
His daughter-in-law, Mrs Iris Hidden, has shown me his marriage certificate, in which he is named as Frederick Charles Hidden, bachelor, aged 29, Sergeant in the 3rd Kings Own Hussars. The marriage took place in Holy Trinity Church, Sialkot, India, 10 November 1906. The bride was Annie Catherine Law, aged 21, spinster, daughrt of James and Winnie (?) Law. Mrs Hidden has a splendid photograph of the wedding party, which includes Frederick's brother Joseph William, also serving in the 3rd Hussars and the bride's parents, James Law being another 3rd Hussar (in uniform). I have seen also Frederick Charles's Army certificates of character and discharge. His certificate of discharge No. 30708 refers to him on discharge as of the 4th Hussars, having been posted thence from the 3rd Hussars, also having previously served in the Essex Yeomanry 2nd Reserve Cavalry Regiment. He held the K.S. & G.C. medal and the Queens Medal. His date of enlistment is given as 7.4.1894 and of discharge as 27.11.1919. His character certificate states that Frederick hidden served 25 years 238 days. His character was exemplary: sober, honest, intelligent, reliable and trustworthy.
He is known to have had two children -- Leslie Charles and Stanley James (S47). The first was born in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1909 and Stanley James in Braintree, Essex in 1914.
Mrs Hidden also showed me the certificate of his death which took place 9 February 1940; he was named Frederick Charles Hidden and was aged 63: his residence at the time was 25 Kingston Road, Southall, Middlesex. During his later years he was employed as groundsman for the Norwood Cricket Club and also a local football club. A witness to his death was his son Stanley James (S47) of 95 Church Drive, Harrow.
Annie Catherine (A252) the wife of Frederick Charles died 3/1980 in the North Hants District aged 80. Her date of birth is given as 27 April 1885 and this corresponds with her age of 21 at the date of her marriage at Sialkot in 1906. (RGI re 20.0451)
The RGI records his birth in the first quarter of 1874 Newbury District reg 2c 151. He is assumed to be the son of Thomas (T22) [died in the Newbury Registration District]. J50 is the brother of Frederick Charles Hidden (F30). He is said to have joined the 3rd Hussars and Mrs Iris Hidden has pointed him out in uniform in the wedding photo of his brother F30 in India in 1906. It seems likely that Frederick Charles, who was the younger of the two brothers, purchased his release from the Royal Berkshire Regiment to join the 3rd Hussars to be with his brother.. The Regiment served in the Boer War.
It seems the 3rd Hussars returned to South Africa, for not only was Frederick's son, Leslie Charles (L40) born there in 1909 (Births from Regimental Registers ref 257.98) but William H. Hidden was born in Pretoria in 1910 (Births from Regimental Registers ref no. 257.82). In each case his father is given as serving in the 3rd Hussars. Other Hidden births from the 3rd Hussars Regimental Registers are: Bessie Hidden (B2) born 1905 at Newbury ref 257.82 and Winifred C. Hidden (W55) born 1912 at Shorncliffe ref 257.82. Shorncliffe was the location of an Army barracks in Kent. The RGI also records the birth of Winifred, in the Elham Registration District of Kent (RGI ref 2a 2067). The mother's surname is Bedell. Since the regimental reference number remains the same for all three births --- Bessie, William H., and Winifred C. it seems probable that they all three were the children of Joseph William; this concurs with Mrs. Iris Hidden's firm statement that William H. and Winifred C. were not brother or sister of her husband Stanley Charles. If this is correct it would seem that the 3rd Hussars served in the Boer War, returned to England or gave home leave to Joseph William c. 1905-6, moved overseas to India 1906 and returned to Britain in 1910. Regimental records should be consulted to confirm this pattern. We have not yet found a record of Joseph William's death [see RGI Bromley Dist 1963 aged 88], nor of the details of his marriage to ---- Bedell [ see RGI Farnham Dist 1904]. Of their children WILLIAM H. (W77) married Olive M. Edgerton in the Surrey SE District 2/1938 (ref 2a 1539). Bessie (B2) married --- Standing in the Godstone District 3/1930 (ref 2a 737). Winifred C. (W55) married ----- Spiers Surrey SE District (ref 2a 1786)
