  • Notes
    • The ID of J243 was originally given to the father of Mary (M123) & James (J016).This has now been changed to J147 (see below). It is clear that he is related to Henry (H048), but the exact nature of that relationship is not known. It is likely that he is either the son or nephew of Henry (H048).
There are only two explicit references to him in the parish register, the burial of his dau Mary in 1739, and the bapt of his son James in 1741. He seems to have had another son Richard who died in 1757 aged about 13, and therefore born about 1744, but no bapt for Richard has been found.
His wife was called Ann, but no marriage has been found. It is likely that Ann was living in Gotherington in 1757, and also that John was no longer alive, since the burial entry for Richard describes him as the son of Ann, rather than the son of John Hidden. It is possible that Ann married secondly George Dark in 1757, but this marriage could also be that of a daughter of J243 (whose bapt has not been found). It is not known what John's occupation was. There are various contemporary deeds and manorial documents in the Gloucestershire Record Office relating to Gotherington, but no mention of John Hidden in connection agriculture has been found. One theory is that he can be identified with J147 who is the son of John Hidden (J145), victualler of Hungerford. J147 was born in 1695 and could have been the father of children born in the 1740s. It is also possible that J145 and Henry (H048) were brothers. This is discussed more fully in another section (FG7 Kintbury-Inkpen). Although it cannot be fully proven on present evidence, the working assumption will be made that John Hidden of Gotherington is the same as J147
