  • Notes
    • There is also an Enoch Hidden (E429) who was born in Boscawen, NH in 1790.
Enoch (E427) is listed in the 1810 census at Providence, RI as the head of a household with 3 males 26-45, 2 females 16-26 and 8 children comprising a boy and a girl under 10, and 6 boys 16-26. This looks like 2 or possibly 3 families living in the same house. There is no other Hidden household in RI at this time.
Enoch must be one of the 3 males aged 26-45, so his dob is 1784 or earlier.
In 1820 there is still only one Hidden household in Providence, RI, but the head is now Mary Hidden. There is just 1 adult female aged 26-45, so this must be Mary. There is 1 male aged 16-26 and there are 4 children comprising 2 boys & 1 girl under 10 and a girl 10-16.
Enoch married Harriet Hubbard at Providence in 1807; her father was Ezra Hubbard who lived in Providence. This was probably the reason that Enoch moved to Providence. Harriet was born in 1788, so in 1810 she would have been aged 22, so would be one of the two females 16-26 in the 1810 census.
The other female in the 1810 census is probably the Mary Hidden of the 1820 census.
In 1830 there are 2 Hidden households in Providence, RI. The head of one is William K Hidden and the head of the other is Mary W Hidden. In the latter household there is only 1 adult female, so this must be Mary W, There are 2 girls and a boy aged 15-20 and 1 boy aged 10-15.
In 1809 James Hidden married Mary Waterman Clifford at Providence
(James had been married previously to Betsey Knowles). The Mary W Hidden referred to above is therefore the wife of James Hidden. James died in 1818, so Mary W would have been a widow in 1820 and head of the household which had previously been that of James.
James was born about 1768, so he would have been aged 42 in 1810 and would be another of the males in the 26-45 age group in the 1810 census.
It is very probable that there is a close relationship between James and Enoch, but we cannot tell what it is exactly. They could be brothers, but unfortunately the parents of both James and Enoch are unknown.
Enoch moved to New York and is listed in a New York City directory in 1812. Enoch's first wife Harriet died in New York in 1815. In 1820 Enoch was the head of a large household in New York. Enoch married secondly Anna Louise Morgan in about 1824.

Birth: ABT 1787 in Rhode Island (see note 3)
Occupation: Gunsmith, Brass Founder, Inventor (see notes 4 & 2)
      Note: (see note 5) 1833 +++

Note: I have been able to trace my family back to Enoch Hidden, born Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He died at his residence, 9 West 28th Street, New York City, December 12, 1876 at age 92 which would put his birth around 1784.
I know that he kept a machine shop and brass foundry and was an active inventor.
In 1837 he obtained a contract for 2,500 cannon-locks and other articles which amounted to $40,000. I have not found any record to indicate who he was married to or who his parents were. I do know from written family history that the family came from England.
Enoch had three children we know of by name and at least one more by reference. His youngest son, Henry B. Hidden was a Lieutenant in the Lincoln Cavalry. He was killed at Burke's Station, near Fairfax Court House, Virginia on March 9th 1862 at the age of 23. See "The Rebellion Record" by Frank Moore, New York City, Vol IV., p 55 and Doc. 84, p 282. Also see "The Ottoman Dynasty" by Alexander W. Hidden, Revised Edition, 1912, p 308. He is buried in the Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings County, NY. Plot: Lot 11307, Section 9. I do not have a picture of the grave stone but I understand that it states "in a gallant and successful charge". I do not know what else is on the headstone. I also do not know if his father, Enoch, is buried there also.
I have not found our family in any history on the genealogy sites that I am aware of. Cindi's, RootsWeb and etc. I know of three children of Enoch, Henry B. (youngest son), Warren Hidden (who established the Turkish Mint and ran it for 55 years) and Henrietta Amelia (eldest daughter who married William Henry Webb, a well known New York shipbuilder).

You have an article on William Webb, ID: 13092. Also on page 308 of the Ottoman Dynasty is the following entry regarding William Webb "And his eldest daughter, Henrietta Amelia Hidden, married Mr. William Henry Webb, the noted ship-builder of New York City and founder of Webb's Academy and Home for Shipbuilders at Sedgwick, Avenue and 188th Street, Borough of Bronx, New York City, N. Y. Mr. William H. Webb died October 30, 1899 and Mrs. Webb on the 5th of April 1902, at their residence, 415 Fifth Avenue, New York City. I would presume that Mr. Hidden had applied for patents but I have been unable to find anything in the records at the Patent and Trademark Office http://www.firstgov.gov/external/external.jsp?url=http://www.uspto.gov/ as they do not have a name reference for the years I was looking for.

pp111-120 Gaede, Frederick C., Enoch Hidden and his Cannon Locks

Enoch first appeared in the New York City Directory in 1813 and maintained a presence there until 1821 where he is listed as a gunsmith. He is recorded with the same occupation in the 1822 New Orleans Directory, and turns up again in New York in the 1824 Directory. In 1842 his occupation is recorded as "Cannon Lock Maker" which continues until 1850-51 when he advertised "Brass & Bell Foundry". The brass foundry listing continued until 1855-56 when Hidden's name is no longer recorded. (1)
According to Tucker, Hidden received the first contract for 500 flint naval cannon locks in 1814.
By 1830-31 Enoch was experimenting with the design of percussion locks to supersede the earlier flint lock design for cannon. By 1837 he had received a contract from the US Ordnance Department for 1,500 percussion cannon locks, for which he was paid $15,000. He designed an improved percussion lock in 1841, and patented the design with Samuel Sawyer of Boston in 1842. Further large contracts were obtained with the Ordnance Department and with the US Navy in subsequent years up until 1851 when he received his last payment from the US armed forces of $949. Thereafter he would confine himself to casting bells and other foundry work in the New York location.

      Note 1
David Longworth, New York Directory, New York: the Author, 1813-1843, lists Hidden's shop variously as 204 Water Street(1813),304 Water Street(1816); 293 Cherry Street (1819); 670 Water Street (1829); 671 Water Street (1830); 664 Water Street (1834).
Starting in 1842 John Doggett Jr's City Directory, New York: the Author, 1842-1853 continues to list Hidden at 664 Water Street as a "cannon lock maker" and "brass founder", the latter title from 1850 until the last entry for Hidden in Wilson's Directory, New York: Trow 1852-1856
Rode's Directory, New York: the Author, 1850-1855 also lists Hidden as a brass founder

Portholes admit light and air into a ship, but need to be watertight and sturdy to withstand heavy weather. For this reason they are typically round, cast in strong metal, fitted with thick glass, and provided with screws or bolts to fasten them securely shut. Hidden's porthole features special screws that cannot be completely removed from the frame and lost. Where the brass porthole frame passes through the side of the vessel, a lead ring prevents water from seeping between the frame and the wooden hull. Additionally, the light frame ,the porthole's window pane, pivots in projecting ears, which allow it to sit firmly in a rubber seal when closed, but "to be hauled from its seat" when opened "so as to allow the plane of the light to be placed at any angle to the main frame, thus freely admitting of ventilation." Hidden's patent was reissued twice, to himself in 1863 and to his son in 1864.

Enoch Hidden (ca. 1795 to ca. 1865) ran a prominent brass foundry in Manhattan. He was fatherinlaw to the renowned New York shipbuilder William H. Webb.

[recno 19039] RARE ENOCH HIDDEN, NEW YORK MADE, 19th CENTURY BRONZE PERCUSSION YACHT CANNON.
This is a fine, fully functional bronze salute cannon with percussion hammer that is operated by a lanyard. This is the only example noted and marked with maker and address E.S.HIDDEN - COR AV.C. & 12 ST - NY. Percussion hammer is of type Enoch Hidden perfected & patented in 1842 from an earlier 1831 design. This unusual early salute cannon is in overall fine condition. NOTE: The percussion hammer lock on this gun was improved & patented by Enoch Hidden in 1842; he earlier designed this lock in 1831. Hidden sold & manufactured these locks for the U.S. Army & Navy. The mechanism has a unique "pulley & wheel" system that gives lanyard pull a strong striking force. Mr. Hidden advertised in the mid - 19th century as "Sole Manufacturer of E. Hidden's Patent Cannon". Hidden made flint cannon locks as early as 1813. His locks were used on the "USS President" in 1814. An excellent article on "Enoch Hidden and His Cannon Locks" appears in "Arms Collecting", Vol. 36, No. 4 by (11-98) Fred Gaede: a copy can be found in provenance. PROVENANCE: Springfield Arsenal, LLC Artillery Collection. CONDITION: 25? overall, 14? wide, 16? tall. Cannon tube is 19? overall with 16? bbl length & about 1-1/2? bore. Brass is very good as polished. Iron vent tube terminates at breech with large cone for percussion cap, which is pitted and worn, as is the iron striker inset into striking portion of hammer. Carriage is solid & functional with a few stress cracks in wood wheels. Total weight of 56-1/2 lbs. 4-54086 (3,000-5,000)

As one of New York City's oldest and largest cemeteries, Green-Wood is an extraordinary resource for genealogists and anyone seeking information about their family members. With more than 560,000 burials, the earliest dating to 1840, Green-Wood estimates that its genealogical information relates to over 20 million individuals alive today. That translates to a massive volume of unique genealogical resources
Founded in 1838 and now a National Historic Landmark, Green-Wood was one of the first rural cemeteries in America. By the early 1860s, it had earned an international reputation for its magnificent beauty and became the prestigious place to be buried, attracting 500,000 visitors a year, second only to Niagara Falls as the nation's greatest tourist attraction.
