    • Discussed in Hiddens of Hungerford Vol 2 Chapter 1
      He married Elizabeth Loveday in 1611. They had a child in 1612, but the child died shortly after birth and Elizabeth died the following day.
      He married secondly Jane Willis in 1617, but she died in 1618.
      He is probably the Thomas Hidden who married Philip Wiblin at Kingston Lisle in 1622. Philip was bapt in Denchworth and the couple seem to have moved there, as she was buried there in 1642 and Thomas in 1641.
      Beneficiary in will 1623.

      Will of john ashton of shawlborne
      In the name of god amen the ninth day of december in the year of our lord 1617 I john ashton of shawlborne eastcourt in the county of berkshire yeoman and in the diocese of sarum being weak in body but of good and perfect memory (thanks be to almighty god) do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following:
      first I commend my soul with hearty prayer until almighty god my maker through the merit of jesus christ my redeemer and the holy ghost my sanctifier and my body when in shall please god to call me, to be buried in the parish church of shawlborne aforesaid.
      item I give towards the reparacions of the cathedral church of sarum twelve pence. item I give towards the church of shalbourne three shillings and four pence.
      item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth and unto her heirs for ever all my lands and tenements in hungerford which I lately had and purchased of john clidsdall alias hidden and thomas clidsdall alias hidden son and heir of the same john clidsdall alias hidden to be holden by the said elizabeth my daughter and the heirs of her body lawfully beggotten in as full measure and manner as I have purchased the same. and for want of such issue I give the same lands and tenements unto my daughter Alice and unto the heirs of her body lawfully begotten and for want of such issue I give the same lands and tenements unto Joan my daughter and unto the heirs of her body lawfully begotten and for want of such issue to the next and right heirs of me the said john ashton for ever. item i give and bequeath unto Elizabeth my daughter more two hundred and fifty pounds. item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Alice all the possibility right [?] and estate which I or my assigns have or may have in crookham by virtue of copy of court roll indenture of lease or otherwise howsoever (excepting one annuitie of forty pounds by the year to be paid by one Richard Goddard gent as by the indenture thereof more plainly may appear).
      item I give and bequeath unto the same Alice my daughter more 50 pounds in money which legacy I will she shall receive within 2 years after my decease by the discretion of mine overseers hereafter named. and if mine overseers shall then thinke it not fit for her to receive her legacy that then it shall be at their power to manage the same for her use a longer time at their good discretion likewise. item I give and bequeath to unto Joane my daughter the sum of three hundred pounds to be paid by my executrix when the said Joane shall have accomplished her full age of one and twenty years and moreover when the said Joane hath accomplished her full age of 1 and 20 years if she then do relinquish all her estate title and interest which she is to have in the copyhold at crookham and do orderly and lawfully leave and yield up the same to the behalf and use of her sister Alice (the lord thereof being agreed withal for the same by the said Alice) then I give and bequeath unto the same said Joane one hundred pounds more in consideration thereof to be paid by mine executrix as is aforesaid but if the said Joane shall then refuse to relinquish her estate in manner and form as aforesaid then I give that same hundred pounds which my will was that she should have in consideration of her estate to be relinquished shall then redound and be liable unto Alice my daughter.
      Item my further will and meaning is that the lease of the mill which I held of the right honourable the earl of Hertford shall be altered at the charge of my executrix and that the estate which my daughter Elizabeth hath or may have therein shall be by her relinquished and her estate be made renewed in the name and to the use of my daughter Joane whereunto if my daughter Elizabeth refuse to grand her goodwill and consent that then she shall not have the 200 and fifty pounds formerly bequeathed unto her but the same 250 pounds shall rebound(?) unto the said Joane my daughter in lieu thereof.
      Item I give and bequeath into my sister Joane Rawlyns the sum of 40 shillings to be paid her within 6 months next after my death if she be then living. Item I give and bequeath unto my sister Mary Byssley the like sum of 40 shillings to be paid to her likewise within 6 months of my death . Item I give and bequeath unto Jane East my sister one annuity of 10 shillings a year to be paid her during her natural life at the time of the of the 2 general assizes to be holden for the country of wiltshire by even portions. Item I give and bequeath unto my kinsman William Tilley 20 shillings. Item I give and bequeath unto my kinswoman Joane Mayle of Hungerford the like sum of 20 shillings. Item I give and bequeath unto my kinsman William Norris of Hungerford the like sum of 20 shillings. Item I give and bequeath unto my kinsman John Rawlens 10 shillings. Item I give and bequeath unto my godson John Stevens of Froxfield six shillings. Item I give and bequeath unto John Norris my now servant and kinsman 20 shillings. Item I give and bequeath unto Robert Benson my servant and unto my now servant maid 6 shillings 8pence apiece, Item I give and bequeath unto every of the children of Thomas Patye my brother in law 2 shillings 6 pence a piece. And unto everyone of my godchildren 12 pence apiece. Item I give and bequeath unto the poor people of shawlbourne the sum of 5 pounds to remain in stocks to their use for ever upon condition that such security and course for the ordering thereof be given by such of the parish within 6 months now next ensuing, as shall seem good to my executrix. But if this security cannot be had and given then I give unto the same poor people the sum of 10 shillings to be paid and distributed amongst them yearly and every year during 10 years by even portions at two several times namely 5 shillings thereof upon good Friday and the other 5 shillings thereof unon the five and twentieth day of december. Item my further will and meaning is that if either [sic] of my said 3 daughters do decease or depart this mortal life before such a time as she or they have received her or their portions or legacies before given and bequeathed, that then the said portion or legacy of her or them so deceased shall remain to the survivor or survivors of them to be equally divided between them, Item my will and meaning is that my overseers shall take security of my kinsman John Patie of Crookham for one annuity of 20 pounds by the year which the same John Patie is to pay for certain years yet to come and security so by them taken to deliver the same to mine executrix hereafter named. All the rest of my goods both moveable and unmoveable not before given or bequeathed I give and bequeath unto Cicilie my wife whom i make sole executrix of this my last will and testament, to see my debts and legacies paid and funeral expenses and all other charges which may arise or grow for any matter contained in this my will or otherwise for any part mine estate to be fully discharged and satisfied. And I do ordain and appoint my well beloved in christ Vincent Smith of Charnam Street, John Hunt of Ham, and my brother in law Thomas Payte of Shawlborne to be mine overseers herin. And I give to every of them for their pains therein to be taken 20 shillings apiece, witnesses hereunto Robert Hatt, the mark of John Norris, the mark of Robert Benson, the mark of me John Ashton.
      Probate 8 may 1618 to Cicilia Ashton relict and executrix named in the will.
